Upgrade Your Home for Less

Sabrina Soto explains how to maximize your home improvement budget and make it feel modern.

If you live in a traditional style home, but dream of something more modern, it can seem like upgrading would be both expensive and time consuming. Not necessarily, says Sabrina Soto. Updating your style can be as easy as sprucing up your paintwork or changing out hardware on doors and cabinets.

First of all, Sabrina suggests changing your color palette and accessories. Updating to a simple, more modern color scheme is an easy way to transform a room, and depending on your skills as a painter, you can do it yourself. Sabrina suggests using colors like white and grey to transform your room. Once you’ve painted, finding a few new accent accessories that fit the color palette will have a big impact on your room without you having to replace all of your current furniture.

Next, Sabrina would look at the bathrooms and kitchens. These rooms can easily look dated while still being perfectly functional, so instead of replacing your cabinets, which would be expensive, consider refinishing them and switching out the knobs and drawer pulls for a more modern look. Pieces with clean lines will work well in modern and transitional style kitchens and bathrooms. To update your bathroom, you can also consider switching out the faucets on your sink, painting the walls a bold color, or adding modern wallpaper. Sabrina loves these tips because they are simple to do on your own but make a big impact on your house.

Now that you have saved some money thanks to Sabrina’s tips, she has a few ideas on where to splurge. Sabrina is always a fan of a great couch; go for a modern design in a classic color. The couch will tie together the modern room with your existing furniture. If you would rather splurge outdoors, Sabrina suggests hiring a professional to work on your landscaping.

The great thing about these projects is that they can be done in a weekend. Tackle each area separately, and your home will look new in a few weeks!
